CULTURE NEWS

  • Medina County Showbiz will present High School Musical at Haddad Theater at 144 North Broadway Street from July 18 to July 27, featuring about 37 students from sixth to 12th grade – double cast to allow more performers – with shows at 7 p.m. or 2 p.m. on select nights.  Cleveland.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Medina County college students were honored for academic excellence this spring at Baldwin Wallace University, Kent State and the University of Tampa. Jayanti Upadhyay received the First-Generation Trailblazer Award at BW — many local students earned Dean’s List honors — as these awards recognized their strong academic performance.  Cleveland.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Last month, Medina Council unanimously approved a $12,000 annual contribution to the SPCA to help manage the city's animal issues. Mayor Dennis Hanwell said the partnership saves money compared to hiring an animal control officer.  Cleveland.com
  • Brunswick officials voted on July 14 to remove the city from the Medina County Solid Waste District's flow control plan—aiming to allow waste to be taken to a private transfer station that may save households about $3 a month. The council also honored Daniel Weber with a Brunswick Good Neighbor Award and approved projects such as a dark fiber agreement with Charter Communications to improve city services.  Cleveland.com
  • Today, the city approved a memorandum of understanding with the Medina Metropolitan Housing Authority to build an 11-unit emergency housing facility on Lafayette Road + the project broke ground in May. MMHA received HUD funding, so the city will complete the required environmental review + MMHA will reimburse any costs incurred.  Cleveland.com
  • Medina City Council approved design services on July 14 for a downtown uptown loop multipurpose path and the reconstruction of East Smith Road — the council chose Cunningham and Associates for the loop project, which will use a $396,000 grant from the Ohio Office of Budget and Management, and recommended Euthenics Inc. for the road project with a $530,000 grant — and work will move forward as planned.  Cleveland.com
