Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 4th of June.
Good morning, Medina.
For the past ten years, Sophia’s Smile has helped families purchase headstones for children lost in tragedy and will host its 10th annual 5K and one-mile walk on Saturday, June 14 at 9 a.m. at Buckeye Woods Park in Medina—registration remains open to honor young lives.
Medina Parks and Recreation will renovate the Community Recreation Center locker rooms this summer—work includes replacing old tile, leveling floors near the showers, and repainting, with the project set to last about four weeks.
City staff will direct patrons to school physical education locker rooms during the renovations, a plan already reviewed by the Board of Education and the rec center advisory committee.
Medina City Engineer Patrick Patton said he will seek a grant to fund a rail replacement between State Road and Progress Street because the nearly 90-year-old track is too weak for today's traffic.
The grant will cover $416,000 of the $520,000 project, and officials will look for other funding options if the grant is not approved — the city also plans to repair frequent rail breaks and meet mandated maintenance requirements.
Three nursing homes in Ohio and Pennsylvania have agreed to pay $3.61 million to settle Medicare and Medicaid fraud claims over substandard care.
Investigators said the facilities—one of which is in Medina—allowed residents to live in pest-infested conditions and receive unnecessary medications between 2016 and 2018.
