COMMUNITY NEWS

  • As spring nears its end, Medina County Park District is hosting a range of free, healthy outdoor events through the end of May, including guided bird walks, hikes, and a native plant sale at local parks and nature centers. Participants of all ages are welcome (check online for full schedules).  Cleveland.com
  • Medina gears up for Memorial Day with a parade on May 25 that begins at the courthouse and moves to Spring Grove Cemetery, while splash pads at Fred Greenwood and Ray Mellert Parks open that weekend and a half marathon runs on May 23 from Medina Square.  Cleveland.com
  • Medina Soccer Association has agreed to contribute $28,000 to upgrade the single restroom at Huffman Cunningham Park to a double vault facility. The park will get the new restroom in six to eight months as part of its master plan.  Cleveland.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Medina High School Orchestra and alumni will perform Strings in the Park at Medina Square from noon to 1 p.m. on May 20; if it rains, the event moves indoors (to the Medina Performing Arts Center, 851 Weymouth Road) for families to enjoy music.  Cleveland.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Medina County commissioners approved a key subdivision replat for a Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic set to serve roughly 25,000 veterans in Montville Township. The approved 36-acre site at the northeast corner of Wooster Pike and Cobblestone Park Drive passed by a 2+0 vote.  Cleveland.com
  • Medina is moving forward on an uptown multipurpose path project as city engineers have requested bids to install a 10 ft wide path along the east side of South Broadway from East Smith Road to East Friendship with added ADA concrete curb ramps, and most of its $417,000 cost is covered by a $396,000 state grant.  Cleveland.com
  • USS Cleveland has arrived in its namesake city for Commissioning Week (a week-long celebration honoring its legacy and crew) and local community events will engage residents throughout the week.  WKYC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Medina business owner Jessica Elioff, who runs Ground Effects Landscape and Design, will travel to France with teammates Chloe Harper and Avery Collins to compete in a 12-hour endurance four-wheeler race on Aug. 22. The team already tested their quad in California and will arrive a week early for preparations.  Cleveland.com
